INDIANAPOLIS SUMMER WORKSHOP

The Mathematics Pentathlon is a program of interactive problem-solving games, supportive curricular and instructional activities, and assessment tools for ALL students in grades K-7. This motivational program strengthens basic math concepts and skills, aligns with National and State Mathematics Standards, and stimulates creative thinking while developing problem-solving skills. A critical feature of this program is the linkage of arithmetic reasoning with geometric/spatial and logical/scientific thinking. These strategic games, activities, and assessments develop an essential futuristic ability: active problem solving - Problem Solving Chart.

A significant study conducted in one of the largest school districts in the United States compared students who participated in the Mathematics Pentathlon Program-MPP with students who did not participate. 100% of MPP students passed on the first round of testing including 5% who were special needs students. Even more compelling -- 77% of MPP students scored above 90% which ranked them as Commended in Mathematics by the State Board of Education. Click on this link to CHECK IT OUT! Mathematics Experience-Based Approach (MEBA) is an instructional system for teaching and assessing mathematics from a conceptual and problem-solving perspective. In essence, MEBA fosters mathematical understanding by building deliberate connections between and among physical models, pictures, and symbols/algorithms. Moreover, MEBA's framework facilitates students' ability to image mathematics concepts in the mind's eye. All MEBA strategies and skills align with Academic National and State Standards for math. In summary, MEBA develops an understanding and meaning of mathematics that lasts a lifetime, can be applied in numerous "real-life" problem-solving contexts, and grows to meet the world's challenges and changes.
